a. His gate (v.20) – A large gate of a palace or a large entry way.
b. His table (v.21) – Produced enough excess to feed others but didn’t.
6. His ___________ (vs. 20-21) – No heart for a hurting man on his stoop
B. Mr. Down and Out – Luke 16:20–21 – And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores.
1. His __________ – “a poor man” – poor, beggarly.
2. His __________ – “name Lazarus” – “God the Helper”.
3. His ___________ – “covered with sores” – In a permanent state of having been covered with ulcers.

5. His _____________ – Lit “He greatly longed to eat to be satisfied with the fallings down from the table of the rich” – He hoped to get some relief from the scrapes of the table of the rich man

Two __________
A. Mr. Down and Out – Luke 16:22a – The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s side.
1. The ___________ – Almost matter of fact for death is the lot of all of us.
2. The ____________– “The poor man died” – emphasis on his status again– His life filled with suffering is over but because of his social status he would have no funeral. His body would be cast outside of Jerusalem in the Valley of Gehenna where refuse was thrown and burned.
3. The _________ – “And was carried by the angels” – Though he did not have a proper funeral he had the best pall-bearers you can have, the angels.
4. The ____________– Destination – “To Abraham’s side” – The lap of Abraham –This is a figure of speech used for heaven in Jesus’ day.
B. Mr. Made in the Shade – Luke 16:22b – The rich man also died and was buried…
1. The ________ – The rich man – His riches and social status might be able to put off death but he could not escape death..
2. The __________– “also died”. Death is not the problem, the after life is.
3. The __________ – “and was buried” – A proper burial with weeping, a eulogy and special things said by the Rabbi.

1. His __________ – Luke 16:23a – and in Hades – Greek “hades” – place of the unbelieving dead – He went to a real place called Hades

a. He is suffering with torments– Luke 16:23b – being in torments..
b. He is seeing into paradise – Luke 16:23c – he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham ….and Lazarus at his side. – Saw and recognized others
c. He is separated from God – Luke 16:23d – far off – from a distance
d. He is supplicating for mercy – Luke 16:24a – And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus ….
e. He is seeking relief– Luke 16:24b – ….. to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue
f. He is struggling with pain – Luke 16:24c – ….., for I am in anguish in this flame.’…..
g. He is sorrowful regarding the past – Luke 16:25a ….. But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember …… – Greek “mimnesko” – recall
h. He is stuck in hell – Luke 16:26 – And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from
here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’

a. An _________ to Abraham – Luke 16:27- 28 – And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’

B. Mr. Down and Out – Luke 16:25 – But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.”
1. “That in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things”.
2. But now – In eternity for eternity
3. “He is comforted” – Greek “parakaleo” – He is continually encouraged.
4. “You are continually tormented”.
